Notes from the Luberon

Six guides written by the people who live here, in Lourmarin. Hilltop villages, the Friday market, cycling routes: what we actually recommend.

The magazine

The Luberon, seen from 21 route d'Apt

We live here all year round, beside the Aigues Brun. We know the road that climbs towards Bonnieux, the hour when the Friday market starts to empty, the late afternoon light on the hilltop villages.

These six guides gather what we answer at the desk every week, when you ask us what to do with your day. We wrote them plainly: what is worth the drive, what can wait for another season, and in which order to link the villages so you do not spend the day in the car. Read them before you travel, or over breakfast with a map on the table.

Lourmarin Castle & Albert Camus' grave

The castle stands above the village; Albert Camus lies in the communal cemetery, under a plain stone. Two short visits, linked on foot, that fit into one morning. Admission to the castle is €8, €3.50 for ages 6 to 12 and free below; opening hours change with the season, so check the castle's own site before you set off.

Your base camp

Leave in the morning, come back to quiet

The grounds are bordered by the Aigues Brun and by century-old trees. You come back from a ride, swim in the natural bathing pond, then share a board on the terrace. Reception is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so a late return is never a problem.

The restaurant serves every day, from 12:00 to 14:00 and from 19:00 to 23:00. The kitchen brings Italy and Thailand together; the cellar leans on the Luberon and Burgundy. The bar carries the evening on with house cocktails.
